The Shanghai subway is one of the youngest in the world and might become the most rapidly expanding if the same pace of construction continues. The first line opened in 1993 and a first section of the second line followed only four years later.A third line, the so-called Pearl Line, mainly elevated, ran 36 km and open for trial operation in June, 2000. Line 5 opened in November 2003. The second phase of the Pearl Line (Line 4) opens in Dec. 2005.

The Shanghai Transrapid Maglev Line is the world's first and only high-speed commercial commuting system using state-of-the-art electromagnetic levitation technology. The 30 km (19.5 miles) and double-track project started in March 2001 and opened for commercial trial operation in December 2002. With a top speed of 430 km per hour (267 miles per hour), it only takes eight minutes for a one-way trip, which connects the Pudong International Airport and the Longyang Road Station, a downtown subway station.

The bus lines in the urban area of Shanghai crisscross like a spider web. Any Line with the "1" as first number belongs to whole day long line, while those with "2" or "4" as first number belong to climax line in the morning and evening (6:00-8:30 and 15:30-18:00) and lines with "3" as the first number belong to nightline (23:00-4:00). Most of the bus tickets price is unified RMB 1.0Yuan. Besides there are new type air-conditioned buses, special line buses, medium buses and double deck buses whose tickets are of two Yuan and 3 Yuans in different grade prices.
