Booming Wire and Cable Market in China -- New Business Circle, New Opportunities

Despite the gloomy global economy, Chinese wire and cable market has been in a rapid growth due to its urban transformation, fast development in power grid construction as well as investments in UHV, submarine cable and wind power projects. Chinese wire and cable industry has increased by 15% annually in the last 15 years. The gross output value of Chinese wire and cable industry has surpassed that in US while China has become the No.1 wire and cable producing country in the world with great potential for development. As the second largest industry next to automobile sector, the domestic market share of wire and cable industry and the satisfaction rate of its products variety could both reach up to over 90%. Currently, the gross output value of Chinese cable industry is more than 140 billion USD. During the twelfth Five-Year period (2011-2015), the growth rate may slow down given the economic restructuring in China. Yet with the overall economic environment remaining stable during 2011-2015, it is expected that the annual industry sales growth is about 4% to 8%. By the end of the twelfth Five-Year period, it is predicted that the amount of copper consumption is about 5.5 to 6.2 million tons, and the amount of aluminum consumption is about 2.6 to 3.2 million tons.

According to the statistics of World Steel Association, China's annual production of crude steel was 695.5 million tons in 2011 accounting for about 45% of global output, with an increase of 8.9% year on year, and was above the average global growth rate of 6.8%. China's crude steel production accounted for 44.7% of the world in 2010 and has increased to 45.5% in 2011. China has become one of the world's largest steel tube producing countries. From January to November 2011, the seamless tube production in China was 24.17 million tons with a year-on-year growth of 8.90%. In terms of production, the top three provinces were Shandong, Jiangsu and Tianjin with production accounted for 19.21%, 14.86% and 13.00% of the overall production respectively. Meanwhile the welded tube production has reached 36.68 million tons, an increase of 28.36% year on year, with Tianjin and Hebei achieved more than half of the national output. During the “Twelfth Five-year“ period, energy-saving and emission-reduction will become an important goal, and development of new product will further accelerate, while steel tube production and export continue to grow steadily. It is an important period of strategic opportunity for China's steel tube industry to restructure and move forward to a steel power.
