Rebound performance: Messe Düsseldorf in China has made a compelling comeback in 2023.

Shanghai, Feb 7, 2024. Messe Düsseldorf in China has made a compelling comeback in 2023. By the end of 2023, the leading 13 trade fairs are back in the saddle in China – the entire range of portfolio for the first time, which marks the busiest and fullest exhibition calendar. With a total exhibition space of 776,500 square meters, an increase of 62.4% over 2019. 10,047 domestic and international exhibitors efficiently displayed their latest products and solutions through our trade fairs which has seen a 28.7% increase from 2019 and 573,771 visitors with a substantial increase of 88%.

Record-breaking achievement in MDS inbound shows.

The following shows are introduced by the order of show dates.

CIOSH 2023 was the first trade fair for occupational safety and health in China after the comprehensive opening of the epidemic situation. 1,522 exhibitors from 14 countries and regions showcased their advanced protective equipment and technology in an exhibition area exceeding 80,000 square meters. The three-day exhibition attracted a record-breaking 47,616 trade visitors, which saw an increase of 32.6% compared to CIOSH 2021 and 63.3% compared to CIOSH 2019, fully restoring and even surpassing the scale prior to the epidemic.

The largest ever CHINAPLAS which was organized by Adsale and co-organized by Messe Düsseldorf in China was successfully concluded at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center on April 20th. The show results were impressively indicating a great surge with 3,905 exhibitors from 38 countries and regions around the world. It occupied 380,000 square meters and recorded an attendance of 248,222 visitors from 149 countries and regions.

As a professional exhibition of the valve and flow control industry, 2023 Valve World Asia Expo brought together more than 100 quality exhibitors from home and abroad. On the first day (April 26), the number of professional audiences exceeded 4000. Exhibitors were able to timely deliver product features and direct communication with target customers on site, in a short time to achieve a variety of business cooperation intention.

In June, All in CARAVANING (AIC) breathed new life into China's Recreational Vehicle (RV) camping industry, fueling its recovery and development, whilst fostering cross-industry integration. The three-day event welcomed 8,300 professional visitors with 200 overseas buyers from about 20 countries and regions. Timo Boll, internationally renowned table tennis star from Germany also visited AIC on June 16th and showcased his passion for RV travel as a seasoned enthusiast.

As the first international wine and spirits trade fair to return to Hong Kong after the easing of the post-pandemic travel restriction, ProWine Hong Kong was successfully held from May 10 to 12. Industry professionals including exhibitors, trade visitors, and partners from around the world gathered here to discuss the future trends of the global wine and spirits market, and to share opportunities and challenges in the wine market. ProWine Hong Kong provides a gateway for global wine producers to expand their business into Asia, while also providing a high-quality platform for local buyers to source the best wine from around the world. 

Tube China, as the flagship event in the tube and pipe industry, attracted 390 exhibitors from 14 countries and regions, a 30% increase compared to the previous edition. Tube China has presented a high-level industry feast, that perfectly integrated innovation technologies and new products, benefiting China's pipe industry and its upstream and downstream sectors.

In August, Medical Fair China was held concurrently with REHACARE CHINA which was being introduced to China for the first time. The two exhibitions have achieved remarkable results within the close cooperation which welcomed 350 leading companies from the  manufacturing, production, and research fields, attracting 9,215 professional visitors. With the mission of "Driving Inclusion", the 1st edition of REHACARE CHINA has garnered extensive attention and positive feedback from exhibitors and visitors, and fostered the integration and communication between people with disabilities and other stakeholders.

As one of the members of wire Worldwide, wire China has become the largest wire and cable industry event in Asia after 19 years of growth. wire China 2023 has attracted more than 900 domestic and foreign exhibitors and welcomed 40,629 professional visitors from 96 countries and regions with the number increased by 30.83% compared to 2018. wire China 2023 caught the attention of wire and cable industry professionals worldwide by comprehensively showcasing the latest development trends and innovative technological achievements in the wire and cable industry.

With an exhibition area of over 62.000 square meters. swop has attracted nearly 900 domestic and foreign exhibitors and welcomed 30,000 professional visitors from packaging and processing industries all around the globe. The three-day event showcased a remarkable 14% increase in visitors compared to the previous edition. The successful conclusion has paved the way for the annual edition starting from 2024.

Last but not least, China in-store, previously called C-star, is the official satellite show of EuroShop which has been dedicated to presenting store solutions with design thinking. The show has welcomed 103 high-quality retail suppliers and design firms, showcasing innovative store designs and retail solutions, attracting 13,934 professional visitors on-site. In addition, 46 domestic and international industry leaders and experts delivered splendid talks on hot topics such as the development trends of China’s retail industry, retail space design, and lightweight construction of commercial spaces, with around 1,240 participants.

 

With decades of efforts, the anniversary celebrations have become a hallmark of MDS shows.

The year of 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the All in Print China. It covered more than 110,000 square meters, with 1,003 exhibitors in the printing and packaging industry from 14 countries and regions and a total of 108,136 trade visitors from 126 countries worldwide attended the 4-day event. All in Print 2023 met its high expectations with a record-breaking exhibition space and the highest number of visitors in the history of the event, making it as the largest printing show in the world in 2023.

As the leading trade fair for the wine and spirits industry in the Chinese mainland, ProWine Shanghai toasted a decade of success and pave the way for another decade of vibrant development of the Chinese wine industry. The show welcomed a total of 27,363 trade visitors which marked an 81.7% growth from the previous edition, and over 660 exhibitors from 32 countries/regions participated in the trade fair, an increase of over 45% compared to the last edition, with international exhibitors comprising more than 75% of the total. Ambassadors from France, Portugal and Georgia, and other government officials showed their support for national pavilions by visiting the show.

 

First time to export a trade fair outside of China: CIOSH Thailand

In the pursuit of continued growth in 2024, MDS casts its eyes on overseas markets when having a steady development in China. China Textile Commerce Association (CTCA) works with Messe Düsseldorf (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (MDS) and Messe Düsseldorf Asia Pte Ltd. (MDA) to present the new platform for personal protective equipment (PPE) in Bangkok: CIOSH Thailand, which will take place for the first time in the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) from 05 - 07 June 2024, after which it will be held annually. It’s also the first time for MDS to export a trade fair outside of China, marking a milestone for the progress of MDS.

 

Stronger Ties: Düsseldorf Delegation’s Successful Visit to China

In April, The Mayor of the City of Düsseldorf and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Messe Düsseldorf, Dr. Stephan Keller, led a Senior Delegation on a five-day visit to China. They were invited to meet with Gong Zheng, the Mayor of Shanghai, and Qin Weizhong, the Mayor of Shenzhen. It’s worth mentioning that Dr. Keller is the first European Mayor who was welcomed by Mayor Gong Zheng from Shanghai following the pandemic. Dr. Keller's visit to China conveyed positive market signals to the MICE industry, such as signing a strategic memorandum with Mr. Lei Limin, Chairman of the China Textile Commerce Association, to strengthen their cooperation for the CIOSH Thailand.

 

Fully Recovered Outbound Exhibitions Promote Chinese Enterprises to the World

Messe Düsseldorf GmbH as a group company, is reporting one of the best-ever result for 2023. The company organized a total of 73 events in Düsseldorf and the worldwide. Sales rose by more than 30% with after-tax profit growing by more than 10%, reaching over EUR 80 million (620 million RMB). Under the worldwide influence of Messe Düsseldorf brand events, MDiC has achieved a significant growth in overseas business in 2023. 

in 2023, MDiC has helped 3,436 Chinese companies participated in trade shows in Düsseldorf and gain access to the world with an exhibition area of 53,111 square meters. China leads as the largest foreign exhibiting nation at Düsseldorf trade shows, constituting 14.0% of all MD exhibitors in Düsseldorf. In terms of net space, China ranks first from outside of Europe and secures the 2nd position in total.

It is noteworthy that at the world's premier trade fairs GMTN (GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS, and NEWCAST), Chinese companies lead in both the number of participants and the amount of floor space occupied. In MEDICA, Chinese companies also boast the highest participation rate and the second largest floor space reservations, following German companies.

The year of 2024 is also promising with a series of world No.1 events to be held in Düsseldorf, including drupa, ProWein, wire & Tube, EuroCIS, CARAVAN SALON Düsseldorf, glasstec, MEDICA, etc. The highly anticipated drupa which is the most influential and the largest trade fair for printing technologies, after long-awaited 8 years, will represent the largest single presentation of Chinese companies in Düsseldorf. New record-breaking achievements in 2024 are expected with more Chinese companies’ participation.

In the year ahead, MDiC will guide leading technologies and products from domestic enterprises to the global market with better services and make progress to a broader market with those enterprises.

 

CSR initiatives in 2023

Besides business growth, MDS showed strong commitment in corporate social responsibility. “SAVE FOOD” is a global initiative jointly launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Messe Düsseldorf, and interpack. It aims to promote innovation, foster cross-disciplinary dialogue, initiate discussions, and reduce global food waste and loss to contribute to the fight against global food loss. on occasion of swop, the 3rd SAVE FOOD China Forum invited experts, scholars and representatives from several organizations and companies convened to exchange insights on topics such as packaging for reducing food loss and waste, transforming agri-food systems by reducing food loss and waste and so on. Through such forums, MDS not only demonstrates its leadership in the industry but also underscores its active response to global challenges.

China has become the country with the greatest demand for rehabilitation in the world. With the mission of "Driving Inclusion", REHACARE CHINA makes every effort to promote the in-depth integration of people with disabilities into society. For instance, during the exhibition, the public welfare platform was launched to show visitors successful cases of integration of people with disabilities into the society. At the same time, the organizer also invited well-known people with disabilities to hold on-site seminars to share their experiences with visitors about employment and social integration, to speak out for people with disabilities and raise extensive awareness from society. This commitment to inclusion and awareness is a testament to the profound impact that such initiatives can have on societal attitudes and the empowerment of people with disabilities.

 

Outlook in 2024

Messe Düsseldorf in China is planning further growth in 2024. This year will showcase the entire portfolio, with the exception of ProWine Hong Kong, which is a biennial event. With the strong return of Valve World Asia and Chinaplas to Shanghai, three-quarters of the 12 events will take place in the city. The entire MDiC exhibition portfolio in China is expected to have a total exhibition area of 798,000 square meters, 10,000 exhibitors from around the globe, along with approximately 600,000 professional visitors. Additionally, the organizer expects an increase in the number of international exhibitors and visitors, thanks to the resurgence in international business and supportive policies facilitating visa-free entry for select countries.
