China Medical Innovation Forum 2016 successfully concluded on 16 July in Suzhou New District, beside the beautiful Lake Taihu. This Forum was hosted by Messe Düsseldorf (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and China Strategic Alliance of Medical Devices Innovation (CSAMDI), and co-organized by innoMD and Jiangsu Medpark.

More than 350 attendees represented in this forum, among which over 50 researchers, doctors, experts and representatives from the medical device innovation service sectors attended the panel discussion to talk about new approaches to industry innovation and services and share with each other valuable experience in innovative achievements transformation and cross-cutting collaboration. The multi-party collaboration mechanism established at the meeting also ensures better services and more conveniences for industry innovation and translational medicine.

Representatives from the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), the Ministry of Science and Technology, Jiangsu Medtech Innovation Hub, and Jiangsu People’s Hospital delivered insightful speeches on the thematic topic of “Translational Medicine - Industry Services - Innovation for Shared Success”.

Wang Lanming, official of SFDA Medical Device Registration Division, delivered a keynote speech “Medical Device Innovation and Innovative Medical Device Registration Regulations”, pointing out three perspectives for medical device innovation: medicine, engineering, and business. Wang also gave a comprehensive analysis on “How to encourage and promote medical device innovation”, and provided informative commentary on registration, approval and other topics of great concern to business operators.

Hua Yutao, Head of Chemical Medicine and Medical Device Section, China National Center for Biotechnology Development, talked about science and technology programs in biomedical field during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (five focus areas, i.e., NSFC funded projects, national major science and technology projects, national key R&D programs, innovation-driven projects (funds), and base & talent projects) in his keynote address “Science and Technology Program Management Reform and Medical Device Industry Layout during the 13th Five-Year Plan Period”.

Professor Wang Jie, President of Jiangsu Institute of Clinical Medicine and Jiangsu People’s Hospital, delivered a keynote speech titled “Translational Medicine, from Concept Formation to Clinical Application”, thoroughly discussing every detail of translational medicine from concept formation to clinical application and concluding that translational medicine features doctor-initiated and patient-centered clinical needs.

Meanwhile, the Forum also declared the establishment of the First Medical Innovation Circle Committee. Medical Innovation Circle is an exchange platform for translational medicine jointly initiated by Messe Düsseldorf Shanghai, China Strategic Alliance of Medical Devices Innovation (CSAMDI), Jiangsu Service Center for Medical Device Innovation, and innoMD. It organizes regular networking and exchange activities for clinical researchers, purchasing managers, medical device business CEOs, and equity investors, with the aim to facilitate collaboration between clinical experts and medical device businesses, promote further development of translational medicine, increase market share of Made-in-China innovative medical devices, support full implementation of a clinical evaluation and improvement mechanism for domestic innovative medical devices, and eventually boost the overall innovation capability of domestic medical devices.

The Forum also led a round-table discussion themed “How Will Translational Medicine and Innovation Services Promote Industry Development”, in addition to a road show of medical device innovation projects.

Suzhou New District takes medical devices as its top priority strategic emerging industry. It has been committed to creating an enabling environment for the medical device industry, by leveraging a series of preferential policies to pool financial and intellectual resources from investors, universities, research institutes, and clinical service institutions. Its goal is to be the most dynamic medical device innovation cluster. This Forum has opened up a way for Suzhou New District, in close cooperation with Medical Innovation Circle, to pursue new mechanisms and new models that can efficiently integrate clinical needs with technology and capital, to promote scientific achievements transformation, and to sustain long-term growth of the medical device industry in the region.

As a side event, the establishment meeting of CAMDI Innovation Services Commission, i.e. China Alliance for Medical Device Innovation Services, was held in Suzhou New District on the day immediately following the forum day. The Commission and Alliance will closely focus on “Innovation Services, Translational Medicine, Technology Finance”, and actively promote and create a one-stop service platform that helps achievements transformation and covers the whole process of business growth, in order to further accelerate industry development.

Due to its big success, the organizers have already planned the next event: China Medical Innovation Forum 2017 will once again take place in June in Suzhou, with the new theme of “Medical Innovation Leading the Industry Development”.
